In 2005, Barbara Esch, Ph.D., BCBA-D, CCC-SLP started the Speech Pathology Applied Behavior Analysis Special Interest Group (SPABA SIG) within ABAI to bridge the gap between speech-language pathology (SLP) and applied behavior analysis (ABA). Her aim was to integrate behavior analytic principles, particularly Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior, into SLP practices. Dr. Esch also wished to promote interprofessional collaboration. SPABA has since grown into a vital community, fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration between SLP and ABA professionals.
